Beware of being taken for a ride when volunteering overseas...

Volunteering overseas has now become an essential part of many people’s personal objectives.

It used to be that only rich kids, or middle-class University educated people would even consider volunteering overseas – it was seen as a class and cultural endeavor. This however is not true today. There are many reasons for this, such as; the advent and increase in volunteer organisations providing volunteer opportunities overseas, the reduced cost of air travel, better communication, primarily through the internet.

But! As always, when better opportunities arise for people , so does the opportunity to scam them. Another reason for this, is the sometimes very high cost of volunteering through some organisations - the big players have huge marketing budgets and corporate identities, lots of staff and big, plush offices - someone has to pay for all of this - and guess who pays? Correct - you pay, the volunteer.

One of the results of high volunteering costs with the large volunteer organizations is the advent and increase of people offering volunteer oportunities overseas that don't actually exist - or at least are very badly organised.

Good Information for Volunteering Overseas is Vital...

Do Not Leave Home Without Adequate Travel Insurance!

The cost is usually low, possibly even free, you just pay for your accommodation - and sadly, often, there is no project when you arrive, if there is a project, it is so badly organised as to be quite pointless.

Here are some of things you can and ought to do to ensure you are not being scammed. Look for organisations that work for and with government institutions - these are usually well organized and legitimate projects.

Avoid dealing with an organisation by email if the corrspondence is wriiten badly.

Make sure the volunteer organisation asks you for references and then follows them-up. If in doubt - telephone the organization, even call the country direct if you have to.

And finally, from time-to-time, we will place scam alerts on this page - please check-back as often as you can. At the time of writing (May 2008), there are some dangers in choosing volunteer programs in Nepal and China. Please ensure you check any volunteer program or project out , before committing - but you ought to do this anyway, as a matter of course.
