Types of Overseas Volunteer Programs
There are many kinds of different overseas volunteer programs and even more different types of volunteer organizations here is a guide to the different kinds of volunteer programs and organizations who send volunteers overseas.
Program Types:
- A straight no frills volunteer program - pure and utter volunteering. One thing you need to check with this kind of program is to ask the organization what you will be doing as many volunteer programs will be listed as generic types. For instance, community development could be a thousand different things.
- Work Experience - Some organizations offer wrok experience or work volunteer programs. You need to check the kind of work you will be doing, is it paid or unpaid. And it's also vital to check the laws and regulations of the country , especially if it's paid work, as many countries will not allow this - but despite this, some organizations may still offer it.
- Internship - This is a tricky one as some volunteer organizations will have a different definition of internship - you really need to ask them; what they mean by internship, ask them the difference between the regular volunteer program and internship - these terms are sometimes interchangeable.
- Adventure Program - This is usually a combination of volunteering with some extreme or other aspect to it - ask them for an itinerary.
- Expedition - This is another ambiguous voluntary program term. Ask then what they mean by, expedition. Frankly, it is often a glorified regular volunteer program with a new name. This isn't always the case though - so please check with the organization.
