Volunteer in Costa Rica on the...
TALAMANCA INDIGENOUS RESERVATION

Imagine what its like on the Talamanca Indigenous Reservation. Imagine what its like to walk miles everyday just to get some fresh water. Imagine what its like living with a sparse electricity supply, imagine having to struggle everyday to ensure that food finds its way into the hungry bellies of you and your family.
We help the community without imposing ourselves as outsiders, moreover we are very keen to help them preserve their culture. Thanks to a volunteer inspired generous loan, we are helping to construct a cultural center in which to meet and teach English, as well as business skills. In addition, we’re also building houses which will be used by the community as bed & breakfast and restaurant. This is an an attempt to attract eco-tourist revenue to their area. They are also creating a commercial fish farm, organic gardens and orchards.
Through English classes and other training, the indigenous community will learn to manage these projects on their own. They are also learning to become ecologically-conscious tour guides for their breathtakingly beautiful area. Our agreement is that they will slowly pay back this loan through the funds generated through these projects.
Construction has begun on a four-bedroom, indigeonous ranch-style home. This home will have consistent running water and bathrooms, of which they currently do not have. The home will be built with a large kitchen to not only feed the families but volunteers and visitors to the reservation. Bungalows will later be built out of the money raised. The bungalows will be used for volunteers to stay, as well as paying guests who want to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the land and it’s people.
